I keep hearing about how there aren’t enough educators and teachers. What can we do to stop this affecting our children’s service?

Question: I keep hearing about how there aren’t enough educators and teachers. What can we do to stop this affecting our children’s service?

Answer:
Whilst there isn’t a magic fix-all, there are some steps you can take to keep your workforce strong.

  1. Think ahead and get planning.
When we get stuck in a reactive space trying to quickly fill positions, we can find ourselves spiraling into a range of problems. Think through your current situation methodically, and what is required to meet specific demands. Do you have high staff turnover? Are Pre-Prep reforms rolling out in your area soon? Are you in an area that has high levels of vulnerability or additional needs of children and families? After answering these questions, consider which skills and characteristics your staff will need to meet this demand. Taking time to analyse what your future challenges and strengths are will help you focus on what steps you can take to plan for a stronger workforce.

  2. Look at grants available in your area to support workforce planning and reach out to CCC to assist!
We have a strong methodology to support you, and we are fortunate to have Julie Price, one of our sector’s leading experts in workforce development, as our Executive Director.

  3. Use your voice to advocate for better recognition and rights for our sector.
It might be by joining the union, campaigning for better conditions and pay, multi-employer bargaining, or letting us know at CCC about the issues facing you. These small steps can have power when we make ourselves heard at government and industry levels.
