How can my service build a strong relationship with my community?

Question: How can my service build a strong relationship with my community?

Answer:
Using reflective practice, following and extending children’s ideas, and learning and implementing key intentional teaching activities will naturally connect you with your broader community

Here are some tips and ideas:

  • Get out and about – organise regular excursion programs for all your age groups, using children’s ideas and interests as inspiration. Areas of learning could include reconciliation, sustainability, STEM, nature play and physical exercise. With teacher guidance, children can develop relationships with diverse people in their community. For example, children could meet with their local park ranger, librarian, baker or bus driver – the list is endless.
  • Throw an annual open day – inviting your community into your service is an opportunity to promote and advocate for education and care, connect with potential new families and create an opportunity for current families to meet and connect.
  • Connect with your local school – school transition programs give children the opportunity to see school playgrounds, libraries and classrooms and allow families to meet with teachers.
  • Seize community project opportunities – nature strip planting, produce sharing, book exchanges, community gardens, cultural food and recipe sharing, and toy swaps are just some examples. These activities promote learning about sustainability, recycling and connection with others.
